Single Bamboo Cane Row Boat

Today’s collaboration with Cellar Image of the Day brings us this photo of the strangest row boat ever: a single bamboo cane!
Villagers from Chishui, near Zuiyi city, came up with the idea, reports News Express. They make the boats out of locally grown bamboo and hold races on the Pinzhou River.
"Participants can sit or stand on the piece of bamboo, and with a thin bamboo oar, they race and compete at other tasks," explained one villager.

Meteorite Crater Causing Mass Sickness?

For our weekly collaboration with Cellar Image of the Day, here is The Andromeda Strain come to life: Peruvian citizens are blaming a mysterious crater, supposedly formed by a meteorite impact, for a host of illnesses:
It has all the hallmarks of a 1950s B-movie - a remote location, mysterious lights in the sky, a crater that appeared from nowhere, and a disease that spread like the plague through locals.
But this is no science fiction film. Officials in Peru yesterday revealed that 200 people had fallen sick after an object from space crashed into the south of the country over the weekend.

But scientists, those party poopers, are unconvinced:
However, other meteor experts are unconvinced. Dr Caroline Smith of the Natural History Museum in London, said: "It’s the third incident like this in Peru in the last few years - and none have turned out to be meteorites.
"It’s far more likely to […]

World’s Oldest Chewing Gum

For today’s collaboration with Cellar Image of the Day, here is (presumably) the world’s oldest gum:
A 5,000-year-old piece of chewing gum - one of the oldest ever to be discovered - has been found by a British archaeology student.
The discovery of the Neolithic gum, made from birch bark tar, was made by Sarah Pickin, 23, during a dig in Finland. The gum had tooth prints in it.
Trevor Brown, her tutor at the University of Derby, said: "Birch bark tar contains phenols, which are antiseptic compounds. It is generally believed that Neolithic people found that by chewing this stuff if they had gum infections it helped to treat the condition."
He said it was particularly significant because of the well defined tooth prints.

No word whether it was found underneath some neolithic table: Link - via Spluch. Be sure to check out Cellar IotD for more amazing pics!
