You are the alpha male, the top dog, the grand kahuna. A young upstart is trying to muscle his way onto your turf and compete for your women. Your solution - click your knees loudly at him. It seems like a strange strategy. For humans, a clicking knee would hardly be a sign of strength but it’s all part of the bizarre communications of the world’s largest antelope - the eland.
Elands bulls have a strict pecking order that determines their access to females in the herd. On the few occasions when they fight, they hardly ever use their dangerous horns and hooves, preferring instead to prove their strength through neck-wrestling. Even these grapples are a rarity; most eland conflicts are settled without violence through a series of ritual signals.
These signals include the bizarre knee-clicks which the bulls make with their front legs while walking. They sound like castanets and can […]

I always think that animals are very interesting to watch. The things they do, if it doesn’t warm your heart, it will definitely make you smile. That is why I couldn’t resist putting irresistibly adorable in the post. Today, its all about the little ones. What is cuter than baby animals? It is baby animals that has a adorable case of mistaken identity of….their own MOMMY.
“Do I look like your mom, kid?”
“Our mom doesn’t say much but she is soft, warm and fuzzy.”
“Mommy, you seemed a little more bushy today.”

In September year, a team of scientists launched a squad of tiny animals into space aboard a Russian satellite. Once in orbit, the creatures were shunted into ventilated containers that exposed them to the vacuum of space. In this final frontier, they had no air and they were subjected to extreme dehydration, freezing temperatures, weightlessness and lashings of both cosmic and solar radiation. It’s hard to imagine a more inhospitable environment for life but not only did the critters survive, they managed to reproduce on their return to Earth. Meet the planet’s toughest animals - the tardigrades.
Tardigrades are small aquatic invertebrates that are also known as “water bears”, after their impossibly cute shuffling walk (see video below). They also happen to be nigh-invincible and can tolerate extreme environments that would kill almost any other animal. They can take temperatures close to absolute zero, punishing doses of radiation and prolonged […]

I’ve only recently started birding with any sort of regularity or enthusiasm, and I’m not all that good at it yet. I snapped a couple of pictures of a bird in flight the other day, and I’ve been trying to figure out what species it is ever since. Despite my lack of expertise, I think I’ve got it narrowed down to two possibilities. Of course, it’s also possible - again given my lack of expertise - that I’ve managed to totally miss even the family identification.
With that in mind, I’m turning to all of you for help. I’ve got two pictures, both taken through a 300mm telephoto lens. One of the two pictures is decent; the other is out of focus. I’m going to post the two pictures below the fold, and then I’ll run through my thinking as I try to id the bird. I’d really love to get […]
